13:45:38 <Flygon> V453000: The assumption that they're hybrids
13:46:06 <Flygon> Able to be powering the electric motors with the batteries and the steam engine itself charging the battery and powering the motors as well
13:46:24 <Eddi|zuHause> Flygon: have you looked through this website which has all kinds of weird engine stuff?
13:46:31 <Eddi|zuHause> i forgot the name
13:46:47 <Flygon> I forgot the name too
13:46:58 <Flygon> But there was no Steam-Electric locos that were hybrid-transmission :p
13:47:17 <Eddi|zuHause> Flygon: in general, batteries have horrible effectiveness
13:47:45 <Flygon> Yeah, but how else are you suppose to power those motors at low speed?
13:48:00 <Eddi|zuHause> you'll get better results by just powering a generator with the steam engine, and then driving all axles electrically
13:48:03 <V453000> perpetuum mobile (y)
13:48:14 <Eddi|zuHause> like diesel-electric, just steam-electric
13:48:26 <Flygon> Yes, but where's the cool factor in that? D:
13:48:27 <V453000> I dont get why should engine A power battery B :d
13:48:43 <Flygon> Unless we feel like building a facade anyway
13:49:50 <Eddi|zuHause> the "cool factor" would be that you're not affected by the diesel shortage that will ensue in the next 20-50 years
13:50:03 <Flygon> True
13:50:06 <Flygon> But by that point
13:50:12 <Flygon> You're better off just electrifying everything
13:50:29 <Eddi|zuHause> yes, i was just about to say that :)
13:50:32 <planetmaker> not if people will steal the catenary to scavange it for copper ;)
13:50:56 <Flygon> https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7231/7169801376_7599982023_z.jpg Let's say, build one of these, but with secondary electric motors and condensors, and... like... well, it probably doesn't need the electric motors
13:51:19 <Flygon> It was literally built to accelerate as fast as possible (and actually does accelerate faster than modern DE's here...)
13:51:21 <Eddi|zuHause> i still wonder why not more electric-battery-hybrid trains are built
13:51:27 <Flygon> So I chose a terrible terrible example
13:51:44 <Flygon> Eddi: Well, technically, Victoria's full of those
13:51:54 <Eddi|zuHause> battery range of ~100-200km, and you usually have electric wires at some point in your travel
13:52:37 <Eddi|zuHause> there are electric/diesel hybrids, or diesel/battery hybrids
13:52:38 <Flygon> The VLocity trains have three motors per car. Two Diesel ones and an Electric one. There's two transmissions. The Diesel ones can switch between taking care of the hydralic transmission, and the electric one is obviously alone with it's own transmission. And yes, it has a battery :P
13:53:15 <Flygon> Reported figures are that it can one one hour on battery alone, but that's just a reported figure, and says nothing on speed...

13:53:29 <Flygon> Either way, this does nothing for their fuel efficiency :B

13:54:59 <Eddi|zuHause> diesel/battery hybrid is the new trend with shunting engines, and electric/diesel hybrids is the new trend for "last mile" connectivity in an otherwise elecrified network. usually the diesel engine can only reach low speeds

15:37:44 <Eddi|zuHause> no, i did not. i just noticed that it's extremely slow and avoided complicated expressions by pre-processing
15:39:57 <Alberth> do you know if it eliminates duplicate expressions in some form, or does it just generate expression code 1-to-1 with the input?
15:41:01 <Eddi|zuHause> no. but i did wonder whether it optimizes shifts and masks into the appropriate nfo concepts instead of advanced varaction2 operations
15:41:52 <Eddi|zuHause> i never got around to/bored enough to investigate

15:46:42 <Alberth> that should solve using memory, and probably allow re-use of reduction results, but it breaks horribly if you change intgernals of expression nodes :)
15:47:40 <Alberth> also, it probably means reviewing and perhaps rewriting all expression code in nml

18:17:23 <Alberth> yeah, /me wondered whether to make it a FAQ :)
18:19:04 <planetmaker> who reads FAQ at tt-forums? The stickies are mostly pointless.
18:19:20 <planetmaker> If so, it probably should be in the openttd wiki. So that everyone can maintain it

18:22:19 <Alberth> hi hi
18:22:56 <Alberth> planetmaker: tt-f has a FAQ?? I didn't know :)
18:23:34 <planetmaker> nah. But there are a lot of stickies. Which all are ignored by what I can tell
18:23:44 <planetmaker> and it probably also has a FAQ somewhere
18:24:03 <Alberth> lots of stickies are quite useless imho
18:24:20 <Alberth> we generally have 2 or 3 topics about forums rules, in every forum :p
18:24:59 <planetmaker> which is already 'a lot' in my eyes
18:25:17 <Wolf01> meh, my noip.com domain has been taken down :(
18:25:27 <Alberth> yeah, and then we generally have another 2 or 3 topics
18:25:38 <Alberth> Wolf01: :(
18:26:04 <Wolf01> (with about 90% of other people's domains)
18:26:06 <planetmaker> Wolf01, *every* NoIP domain has been taken down
18:26:20 <planetmaker> thanks to Microsoft trying to stop one or two (literally) malware distributors
18:26:50 <Alberth> that's going to get them great publicity :p
18:28:24 <planetmaker> s/going to get/getting/ :P
18:28:57 <Rubidium> finally it's literally no-IP ;)
18:29:03 <planetmaker> :P
18:29:05 <Wolf01> "Using that same logic maybe No-IP can get a court order to take the bing.com domain because you can find illegal content on it?" really...
18:29:29 <planetmaker> Wolf01, yeah. With the same reason you can shut down bing and hotmail, too
18:29:39 <planetmaker> especially the latter
