16:55:35 <Terkhen> hi Xotic750
16:55:45 <Xotic750> Hi there
16:56:11 <Terkhen> I never liked much using the C preprocessor in my nml projects, but I don't know a word about M4... any obvious advantages?
16:56:54 <Xotic750> well, I have just redone ogfx-trains in it, and I can say it is fantastic
16:57:17 <Xotic750> so many things I can now template that I couldn't beforew
16:57:39 <Xotic750> and the output it produces is readable, rather than huge long lines
16:58:40 <Xotic750> far better suited to writing NewGRFs compared to cpp
16:59:24 * Hirundo would prefer NML having such features that preprocessor magic is not needed
17:00:39 <Xotic750> of course but I guess NML is likely never to have such features code? :)
17:01:02 <frosch123> Terkhen: m4 is considered the final preprocessor :) it is the most advanced, but the features can also make it quite cryptic
17:01:06 <frosch123> but it all depends on the user
17:01:59 <Terkhen> I would also prefer templating as a native feature in NML, but meanwhile... :)
17:02:40 <Terkhen> nice, I'll check your work in ogfx-trains to get an idea of what it can do then :)
17:02:42 <Xotic750> now, all I need is for planetmaker to give his blessing for an upload :P
17:02:55 <Terkhen> oh, then I'll have to wait for checking it:P
17:03:17 <Terkhen> I don't plan to work much more in ogfx-rv, though, but I'm curious
17:03:28 <Xotic750> you can gladly have a zipped up copy of the pnml files, if you are interested
17:04:09 <Xotic750> I can put a copy on the backup server

17:06:11 <Terkhen> don't worry, it can wait :)
17:06:48 <Terkhen> as I said, until someone(TM) starts providing sprites for ogfx-rv I won't be working on it
17:06:50 <Terkhen> oh, hi LordAro :P
17:07:23 <Xotic750> https://bitbucket.org/Xotic750/ogfx-trains/downloads/src.tar.gz
17:07:39 <Terkhen> thanks :)
17:07:40 <Xotic750> well, that's the source, just missing my Makefile changes
17:08:12 <LordAro> hai Terkhen :) (note: wrong(ish) channel :P)

17:37:41 <Terkhen> it looks somewhat similar to what cpp can do
17:37:50 <Terkhen> but maybe that's because I'm not used to it :)
17:38:42 <Xotic750> it can do all of what cpp can do and then some :)
17:41:49 <Xotic750> like you don't have the headache of the 2 pass macros, and you can it can do iteration
17:42:24 <Xotic750> the only downside that I have noticed so far though, is the fact that you can't name macro arguments
17:42:45 <Xotic750> and have to use a shell like manner, , and so on
17:47:35 <Terkhen> hmm... I see :P
17:47:41 <Terkhen> I'll give it a try somewhen

19:42:51 <planetmaker> hm, gnu m4...
19:42:55 <planetmaker> hello also
19:43:13 <planetmaker> it's not my project then anymore, I fear
19:43:35 <planetmaker> but might be a good idea nevertheless
19:50:54 <planetmaker> but it might anyway be good to hand it over or so
19:51:08 <planetmaker> eager hands with time at hands are good ;-)
19:51:17 <planetmaker> I hope it stays ogfx+trains, though
19:51:22 <planetmaker> and not yet another trainset
20:30:53 <Terkhen> it should :P
20:34:57 <Terkhen> IMO that's what make it special :P
20:35:44 <planetmaker> yes, I agree there
20:35:58 <planetmaker> But I'm not 100% convinced that xotic shares that view
20:37:22 <planetmaker> i.e. too much realism etc will hurt it IMHO. I already find the articulated tenders... going far
20:37:46 <planetmaker> it it doesn't matter much as it doesn't restrict much in what the players can do
